Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated skin

Dry vs. Dehydrated

Dry skin is a skin type and dehydrated skin is a skin condition. Major difference in the causes and treatments of dry and dehydrated skin, yet the symptoms feel similar so it can be hard to differentiate. Your skin type is what you're naturally born with, such as oily skin or dry skin. Skin conditions however, are characteristics your skin has adapted based on habits and/or environmental factors. Skin conditions are often temporary and can be corrected with treatment but it is possible for skin conditions to become permanent if prolonged or treated incorrectly.

Dry Skin

Having dry skin means lacking oils/ moisture or being sebum deficient. Sebum is an oily, waxy substance produced by the body (sebaceous glands) to coat, moisturize, and protect skin. If your body produces excess sebum, you have oily skin. Normal/ balanced skin is also a skin type and results from the body producing the ideal amount of sebum that it needs. Rare, but very possible. Treatment for dry skin includes using an oil cleanser as a pre-cleanse before using a more astringent cleanser either formulated for dry skin, or for all skin types. Double cleansing is key.

Dehydrated Skin

If dehydrated, then your skin is lacking water. This can be caused by diet, medications, incorrect makeup or skin care product use, weather, etc. When dehydrated, skin creates excess oil (sebum) to make up for lack of water. This can cause breakouts, irritation, visible dry patches and even feel oily and dry at the same time. Your overall skin tone and complexion may appear uneven, and fine lines and texture become more noticeable whenever skin is dehydrated. Annoying, but not difficult to control or correct. Treatment begins from the inside out to replenish and maintain hydration throughout your body given the skin is an organ. Increase your water intake so your body will have enough to distribute among your organs and use products that are rich in hyaluronic acid, this will hold and preserve water to constantly maintain hydration. Most people with similar skin conditions notice visible improvement just after one or two uses of Baby Cheeks Moisturizer.
